I was organizing some images this morning and trying to think about a post. I came across some promo images I shot for my friend and his band a little while back. This one image I've always liked. Very simple, yet there seems to be a ton of character and personality. And that's Clay Singletary. He's an insanely talented and versatile musician. Check him out here on Instagram.
I was digging through some old pictures from a shoot last year and found this image. It's interesting how some images don't strike you as interesting or worthwhile the first or even the second pass. For that matter, you might not even consider them at all and tempted to delete them all together, but for some unknown reason, you hold onto them. They're filed away and gobs of new images pile up. You forget about them all together.
Then one day, you take another look and you find something very interesting and striking. That's what happened here. Have my tastes changed over a year? I don't think so. I feel I was probably too tunnel visioned while getting through the culling process that I probably missed a lot. I certainly missed this one.
I happen to like it and I hope you do as well. Stay cool!
We've all dreamed of dropping everything and going on a big adventure. There's something sexy about the idea of leaving it all behind, throwing caution to the wind and exploring the unknown. I've dreamed about it for years, but never had the guts to do it.
It's become a topic of discussion between my girlfriend, Mandy, and I recently. As a matter of fact, we talk about it quite a bit. So much so, that you might call this obsessive. Finally, we decided to come up with some kind of grand design for this adventure. Where the hell are we going? What the hell is this grand adventure anyway? Both being artists and longing for the pull of the road, we decided we wanted to make it mean something. We wanted to document this and share it with the world. To find out more click here.
We can't do this alone. We need your help and want you a part of this journey.
As a creative, I struggle with the reality of whether or not my vision is coming true. I'm focused on the end result almost all of the time. It's a hard thing not to do especially when I know the exact direction I want to go. But somehow, more often than not, I see my finished work as "not quite there yet". There's a very noticeable gap between the work I'm creating and the work I want to be creating. This can be equally inspirational and depressing all at the same time. The result of which can lead me to long periods of not creating anything at all.
I've heard it time and time again that in order to get to where you want to be, you just have to continue to create work. Work hard at your craft. I made the most leaps and bounds in my photographic work when I took on the 365 day challenge a couple years back. I suppose one could compare it to hiking a trail. You'll never reach the end unless you continue to put one foot in front of the other. There's a gap between start and finish that can only be closed by walking on. No matter how many times you might stumble or fall.
I recently saw this video. It was sent to me by a good friend. Although I've heard this before, I felt like it really struck a cord with me yesterday. Here's to all you creatives that struggle. Create the work, good or bad. Each step brings you closer. Close the gap.
